The Construction Effects of Lower Crude Prices (February 2015)
The Construction Effects of Lower Crude Prices Cover 2015Feb42015Feb5 – During the past five years, construction of heavy industrial facilities has surged. Activity gained as increases in the production volumes of natural gas led to lower prices, which fell from $12 to under $4 per million British Thermal Units (MMBTUs) with recent prices even lower. The drop reduced drilling, but stimulated investment in chemical plants, natural gas electricity generation, petroleum refining and natural gas plants, as well in pipelines and export terminals. Low prices also lifted manufacturing more broadly, cutting energy costs for the production for a broad range of goods. The big question addressed by this report is to what degree lower petroleum prices will disrupt construction trends in key industrial sectors over the next few years.
